On Friday, 30 June 2023, Kelly Blincoe and Priyanka Dhopade, attended the Faculty of Engineering’s Equity and Diversity hui. They presented findings from a recent study investigating factors affecting students’ sense of inclusion in our undergraduate engineering programme. The research team is currently writing a manuscript to report these results, which we will share with the ENGclusion community soon. In the meantime, we presented the preliminary findings and suggested actions that the Faculty can take to improve inclusion. Our suggestions included:
- continuing (and expanding) support for historically excluded groups,
- offering more training for staff and students,
- providing resources and training on inclusive language, and
- engaging more with our equity groups and clubs like Rainbow Engineering.
The hui was organised by Associate Professor Catherine Watson, the Faculty of Engineering’s Associate Dean Equity and Diversity/Manupiri Tōkeke. About 40 people attended the hui and discussed long-term strategies and short-term changes that can be made to improve inclusion and equity in the faculty. It was great to see a large number of people across the Faculty supporting this event.
